The history of science and medicine has been developing rapidly during the past ten years. New priorities have meant that it has been changing perhaps faster than many sciences. There has been a considerable increase in publications, particularly monographs and periodicals, and a need has arisen to present a balanced survey of the literature and of underlying changes in interpretation.

The aim of the present survey of literature, methods and concepts is to provide a series of succinct assessments of important areas of the history of science and medicine. The division of the volume into four parts is designed both to produce a reference work with readily accessible bibliographical and historical information, and to present essays that are readable and also of interest to specialist groups concerned with particular disciplines and themes. General chapters consider not only the development and main features of the history of science and medicine, but also relations with associated areas: anthropology, philosophy, religion and the social sciences. The second section of the book deals with general literature and major institutions, and provides an outline of research methods. This is followed by essays dealing with historical treatments of a range of modern sciences and developments in medicine: the physical sciences, mathematics, chemistry and the life sciences, as well as scientific instruments and medicine since 1500. This organization reflects recent developments in many respects. History of medicine is accorded independent status, so that medical developments are treated primarily as distinctive . . .
