The explanation for the division of Party Politics into three volumes was given in the Preface to Volume I, which was published under the title Appeal to the People in 1960. This second volume deals with the development of political parties in Great Britain, especially since 1783, though a lengthy first chapter takes the story back to the Long Parliament. Party politics both in the eighteenth century and in the nineteenth century are being reinterpreted by the historians of the present generation, and I cannot hope that they will always agree with my conclusions.
This volume, like its predecessor, was typed by my daughter, Mrs Claire Dewing.
