This book did not grow out of a master plan, in the way a well-designed house or factory is built. Rather, it began as a one-room cabin, was expanded to several rooms and a second story, and then was connected with other cabins. The resulting structure is sufficient as a shelter for some ideas that I think are important, but it is hardly more than that. Already I sense that the ideas are bursting to move into newer and better housing.

About a decade ago some leading businessmen asked me questions as an editor that I could not answer. The businessmen were looking for articles and books that might shed light on problems of justice in organizations—not so much pay, safety, or working conditions as matters like "due process" and "rights."

Unable to refer my correspondents to publications of the sort they wanted, I began studying the subject myself. One survey grew into several surveys, one newspaper article grew into a series, a short article for one magazine grew into a longer article for another magazine, and the various fragmented efforts together grew into this volume.

None of these expansions could be planned in advance. Each was encouraged by readers and listeners who indicated there was more, much more, to be said about a vast subject that we scarcely have a name for yet. Some called it "employee rights." Others referred to it as "due process" or "constitutionalism." Some people used such descriptions as "puppets" and "autocrats." The semantic difficulties did not deter us. What we wanted to discuss and make room for had reality even if it lacked an agreed-on label.
