During the eight years since the publication of the first edition of this book in 1953, very marked development has been made in the research field of rock magnetism. Even dealing only with the results of research carried out in my own laboratory, fundamental knowledge of both basic and practical problems of rock magnetism has been vastly improved, many new facts having also been discovered, and consequently it seems to me that the contents of the first edition should be completely revised in order to give even just an outline of the present situation in this particular branch of science.

During the same period, much effort has been made by a large number of scientists in various countries with great success in the progress of rock magnetism and its application to the earth's science, such as, for example, archaeomagnetism and palaeomagnetism. Now, the total number of published papers on these subjects, as well as the number of scientists engaging in research are numerous and increased compared with those before the time of publishing the first edition. For instance typical rocks of each of the Seven Continents over the world have already been more or less examined from viewpoints of rock magnetism and palaeomagnetism. Accordingly, the geophysical and geological side of rock magnetism research has been extended so widely and deeply that we can now deal with the global and regional aspects of the earth on the basis of rock magnetism.

On the other hand, the physics and chemistry of metallic oxides and similar compounds have been markedly developed since 1953, when this kind of research was still in its early stage, as mentioned in the Preface to the first edition. Indeed, rock magnetism is fundamentally based upon the physics of these materials, and therefore the progress in the latter field of science directly results in the progress of rock magnetism.
