Most authors who have addressed the problem of crime and delinquency have approached the topic from a male perspective, tending to focus on male offenders while disregarding the female offender. Crime has rather myopically been seen as a "male" problem to the neglect of the female contribution to the phenomenon. The present volume, in contrast, brings to light the other side, the female side of the criminological coin, in an effort to close the informational gap between the deviance of men and the alleged female "differences" extant in the study of female crime and delinquency. Members of both sexes are certainly capable of and involved in criminal behavior. Crime is not the exclusive domain of males any more than certain types of offenses—for example, prostitution—are peculiar to females. This book is written for those specializing in criminology, law, sociology, psychology, and other related disciplines, as well as for the public at large, all of whom increasingly demand more knowledge of female criminality.

Those in the social sciences and law who are interested in deviance, criminological theory, and process, have become painfully aware that there has been a conspicuous lack of social scientific data on the female miscreant. Recent authors have emphasized dramatic increases in the arrests of females, especially among adolescents, and have noted the broadening of the types of offenses committed by females, including a greater degree of violence. In an ongoing attempt to determine the etiology of crime and delinquency, and to generate theory, we can no longer ignore the role of the female in crime. Eventually a unified theory of crime causation must include both sexes if it is to truly be explanatory. Female Crime and Delinquency is an effort to generate a unisex theory of crime and delinquency . . .
