The present volume, containing the proceedings of a colloquium jointly mounted on 11-12 April 1989 by the Institut Français d'Ecosse and the French Department of the University of Edinburgh, has been prepared with the help and cooperation of a large number of people. I am conscious of my debt to Alain Bourdon, Director of the Institut Français, who with his own colleagues worked so hard to organise the colloquium and who has so generously helped to finance the publication of our proceedings which appropriately, in this year of the bicentenaire, took place in an atmosphere of liberty and equality, but above all of international fraternity. I am equally grateful to Professor Denis Roberts, Librarian of the National Library of Scotland, who drew material from the Crawford Collection of Revolutionary documents and who mounted, uniquely for the benefit and pleasure of the participants in the colloquium, an exhibition which he invited them to enjoy in elegant and festive surroundings.

I wish to acknowledge the grant which the administrators of the University of Edinburgh Faculty of Arts Research Fund so readily made towards the material preparation of this volume. My thanks are due also to the French Department's two secretaries, Tessa Brown and Deborah McVittie, who worked uncomplainingly within a timetable which necessarily had to be demanding if our publication were to figure as a timely contribution towards the celebration of 1789. Against an unavoidable background of constant minor crisis, (due essentially to that race against time), Martin Spencer and Vivian Bone of the University Press invariably responded with advice, encouragement and understanding. I am most grateful to them both.
