Excerpt

I am deeply indebted to Professor Pelliot, who not only allowed me to use prints taken from his Tun-huang negatives, but also furnished me with information upon many points; and to Mr.Roger Fry, who lent photographs of the Takahashi Lohan.

Mr. Oscar Raphael, Mr.George Eumorphopoulos, Monsieur Charles Vignier and Monsieur Adolphe Stoclet kindly allowed me to reproduce paintings in their possession. Messrs. Yamanaka gave me permission to publish three paintings, one of which has since passed into a private collection. Plates XXIX and XXX are from the Kokka, and are republished by kind permission of Mr.Taki, the Editor.
