Although only four years have elapsed since the Second Edition of this work went to press, enough changes in our retailing picture have occurred in the interim to require substantial revisions of certain of the statistical data as well as additions to the text. The new material includes not only obvious additions to the annual records of individual chains, the inclusion and interpretation of the latest Census figures and a review of recent governmental action and court decisions affecting the chains, but, more significantly, the impact on the chains of the continued growth of shopping centers and the almost revolutionary emphasis on low-margin retailing stemming from the success of discount stores.
