The following essay, substantially in its present form, was prepared for a course of Lowell Institute lectures, given in March, 1904. The purpose for which it was originally written has considerably affected the arrangement and the mode of presenting the subject. The writer's aim was not to offer a critical examination of the innumerable questions which arise in the study of the Apostolic Age, nor to cover the ground with encyclopedic completeness, but rather to outline a sketch from which a popular audience might gain a stronger sense of the human historical reality which modern critical study finds in the men and events of this stirring period of the world's history. In so rapid a view it was inevitable that many matters, even of some importance, should be inadequately treated or left altogether unmentioned, and any thorough student of these themes will frequently observe such gaps.
