The earlier editions indicated that this volume would be revised whenever necessary, and that necessity now is evident. Certain sections have been deleted, and new material has been added. The use of classical manometric methods has declined somewhat in recent years coincident with a steadily increasing use of spectrophotometric methods. The change has not prompted any substantial reduction in our coverage of manometric techniques, but has necessitated the addition of a chapter on spectrophotometry. Rapid advances are reflected in the extensive revisions of the chapters on the isolation of particulate components of the cell and the analysis of phosphorylated intermediates. Chapter 15 should be an especially welcome addition to the volume, for it presents a rational basis for the development of chromatographic methods.

The objective of the book remains unchanged, namely, to offer a practical manual for use in the laboratory. The conviction that revision and republication of the volume is warranted has been strengthened by our observation of battered and acid marred copies of "Manometric Techniques" in many laboratories.

We wish to thank all of the contributors sincerely, for the volume has grown from a cooperative effort.
