ACT ONE

SCENE I

The back porch of ALLAN ROSS's home in Mapleton, Ohio. It is the typical back porch of a typical Mid-West town.

A short flight of steps leads from the porch onto a pleasant stretch of lawn, and sprawled out on the grass are ALLAN ROSS and his friend FRANKIE DAVIS, lazily trying to mend a broken lawn mower, and not making too good a job of it.

They are whistling the Air Corps Song with a great deal of gusto, however, and as the roar of a plane is heard overhead, they both leap to their feet and follow it across the sky.
