The Bible and Archaeology

Excerpt

The present volume contains the material which formerly appeared in the three smaller Pathway Books Archaeology and the Old Testament (1957, 2nd ed. 1959), Archaeology and the Pre-Christian Centuries (1958, 2nd ed. 1959), and Archaeology and the New Testament (1960). These smaller volumes have now been brought together into one volume with some rearrangement, and with the addition of more recent information, new maps, and numerous relevant and excellent photographs. Reference to more recent works is made in footnotes, and additional quotations from the ancient records of the Near East have been woven into the text.

The aim of the volume is to provide a concise resumé of the information that is now available for the study of the biblical records as a result of many years of excavation in Bible lands. In so short a compass there can be no pretense of being exhaustive. Indeed many important items have been mentioned only in passing, and significant books in French and German with their wealth of detail have been given very scant mention. Many have not even been cited. This results from the fact that this volume is intended in the first place for English‐ speaking readers who are not familiar with other languages. In a few cases the footnotes will point to some of these works. But the Bibliography at the end of this volume will provide a list of larger works in many of which the diligent reader will find comprehensive reading lists.

Regrettably, only passing reference can be made at present to the contributions of the Ebla archives. Despite the immense potential of the tablets for biblical studies, as yet they have been examined only cursorily, and much of the scholarly interpretation remains embroiled in controversy.
