Excerpt

This translation of Dr.Werner Schlote's Entwicklung und Strukturwandlungen' des englischen Aussenhandels von 1700 bis zur Gegenwart (Jena, 1938) has been made by Dr. W. O. Henderson and Dr. W. H. Chaloner of the Department of Economic History of the University of Manchester. They desire to thank Professor Arthur Redford and Professor E. Devons who have read the translation in typescript and have made valuable suggestions and also Dr. G. Flack who made a preliminary examination of the German text. Dr. Schlote has kindly cleared up some of the more obscure points in the text. Our colleagues, Dr. T. S. Willan, and Mr. B. W. Clapp, and also Dr. F. V. Meyer of University College, Exeter, have examined the proofs of the translation and we are indebted to them for helpful suggestions.

The translators appreciate that Dr. Schlote's methods of statistical analysis as well as some of his conclusions may be subjects of controversy. They do not presume to offer a critical edition of Dr. Schlote's work in which such matters would be discussed. They have confined themselves to producing as accurate a translation as possible. A few phrases have been interpolated in square brackets in the hope of making the author's meaning as clear as possible. Occasionally a footnote has been slightly amplified, also in square brackets, and some information has been added about the research that has been done since 1938 on the history of British overseas trade.
