I must first acknowledge with humility and gratitude the writings of Dylan Thomas himself, for no writer about Dylan can approach his own mocking appreciation of himself: his words have been lovingly preserved by his agents David Higham Associates and his literary executors, and carefully published by J. M. Dent & Sons. Caitlin Thomas's two books, "Leftover Life To Kill" ( London, 1957) and Not Quite Posthumous Letter To My Daughter ( London, 1963), show both a profound insight into Dylan's character and the greatness of her loss. Constantine Fitzgibbon's biography, "The Life of Dylan Thomas" ( London, 1965), and his editing of Selected Letters of Dylan Thomas ( London, 1966), put together most of the best material on the poet, and inform any reader with anecdote and intimation, reminiscence and insight. Bill Read's The Days of Dylan Thomas ( London, 1965) puts a pleasant text between photographs of Dylan, mainly by Rollie McKenna, while John Malcolm Brinnin, Dylan Thomas in America ( London, 1956) remains the unfortunate testimony of Dylan's fall to death. Dylan Thomas, Letters to Vernon Watkins ( London, 1957) is a fine record of poetic craft and deep friendship.

Of the memoirs and appreciations of Dylan, far the best is John Ackerman's Dylan Thomas: His Life and Work ( London, 1964), with its emphasis on Dylan's Welsh heritage. I am also indebted to Ralph Maud's scholarly work in "Poet in the Making: The Notebooks of Dylan Thomas" ( London, 1968) and for his Dylan Thomas in Print: a Bibliographical History ( London, 1970). Douglas Cleverdon's The Growth of Under Milk Wood ( London, 1969) is also essential for a textual understanding of the play.
