Excerpt

Studies of civil jury verdicts have been a prominent feature of the Institute for Civil Justice's research agenda since its inception. This work has included the creation of a database for the analysis of jury verdicts and descriptive and analytic studies of verdict trends.

The present study extends the jury verdict work in two significant directions: First, whereas previous research described and analyzed jury verdicts from jurisdictions in only two states-- Illinois and California--this study includes verdicts from jurisdictions in additional states around the nation, including New York, Texas, Washington, and Missouri. Second, the analysis includes data through 1994.

This study should be of interest to corporations, attorneys, and policymakers concerned with trends in civil justice and civil justice reform.
