It is probably safe to say that there are very few people in North America today who have never heard of the UFO abduction phenomenon. Most of us have at least some knowledge of the frightening stories told by people who claim to have been taken from homes, beds, or even their moving automobiles, and subjected to a series of often unpleasant and painful tests by strange-looking little creatures with large, hairless heads and enormous, dark, "wrap-around" eyes. Rarely a week goes by, it seems, without an appearance by an abductee on television or in a magazine, and each season appears to bring with it a new book or film on the subject. Whatever the actual cause of these experiences, one thing is certain: from their first appearance, alien abduction stories have fascinated the North American public to an unparalleled degree.

Initially, I was struck by the extent of the American public's interest in this subject, to say nothing of its readiness to accept more or less at face value the stories the abductees were telling. This degree of public acceptance is itself surprising when we recall that our century has been replete with visionaries whose claims of having encountered unearthly beings were ignored or otherwise summarily dismissed by all but a few devoted followers.
