A well-known phrase of a song popular during the Civil Rights Movement of the Sixties was, "Blacks and Whites together, we shall overcome." The dream was that Blacks, Whites, males, females, the young and the not-so-young would all join forces to overcome injustices, discrimination, and segregation. All would organize and unite in a fight for equality and integration.

This was not the first time in United States history that a disgruntled, dissatisfied, angry people protested against blatant racial inequalities in the society. There had been protests in the form of organizations like Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association in the 1920s and the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), founded in 1910. There also had been periodic "race riots," which sometimes featured garbage cans filled with ashes thrown from tenement roofs and snipers with zip guns. More recently, there has been open warfare between police and other forces against the "rioters," with the "rioters" using shotguns, rifles, and handguns in retaliation. The major race riot that occurred in Miami, Florida, May 17-19, 1980, was an example of a serious confrontation, with a great deal of violence, stemming from racial injustices.
