Excerpt

This Abstract summarizes the more important and significant statistics contained in the eleven volumes of the Fourteenth Census Reports and is designed to meet the requirements of those who desire the statistics for the census as a whole in convenient form for ready reference or who may not have access to the complete reports. The Abstract is divided into seven parts: Population, Occupations, Agriculture, Irrigation, Drainage, Manufactures, and Mines and Quarries. This presentation conforms in general to that of the Fourteenth Census Reports. Each part contains a detailed table of contents and definitions of terms which have been given precise or special significance in census work.Nearly all the tables presenting statistics by states also give figures for the United States as a whole and for nine groups of states, designated as geographic divisions. The states which constitute the geographic divisions are given below in their respective groupings, and the relation of the several groups can be ascertained by reference to the map on the opposite page.
