Science in the University

Excerpt

This volume is offered as a token of appreciation to the State of California and its citizens, who for three-quarters of a century have generously supported the University through the medium of public and private funds. The University of California has a long and vigorously continuing record of achievement in science, which receives its due in the scientific world; and the results of researches made by its men of science, which are continually being published, find use and value among scientists the world around. The celebration of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the University's founding offers an occasion for publishing a volume of scientific papers for a less specialized audience. The selections have been so made as to give the public a view of technical, popular, and semipopular expressions of the work of scientific investigators. Some of the papers represent exclusively the researches of their authors; others give a general account of the nature and accomplishments of a whole field of science. Thus both the significance and the content of works of science are exemplified and illuminated.
