Outwitting Hitler, Surviving Stalin: The Story of Arthur Spindler

Synopsis

"This book tells an amazing story of courage, conviction and intrigue during World War II. Arthur Spindler is a Polish Jew who against incredible odds manages to survive both German occupation and anti-Semitism amongst the local population, only to end up after the war in a prison camp in Russia. How Arthur triumphs by assuming a Polish identity, working as a wheat controller for the Germans and at the same time becoming an officer in the Polish underground army, is a story to be read and experienced. Very special photographs of Arthur's family complement and enhance the text." Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

My family lived in Tarnow, a city in Galicia, in the south-east corner of Poland. Like other children, I tended to take the surroundings I grew up in for granted and didn't appreciate what a lovely place it was. However, now I remember the river and the sun, warm on the rosy medieval buildings, and the lovely feeling of permanence that old towns give. Men had begun to build in this sheltered valley as long ago as the twelfth century. in the years between the World Wars, the small city was a thriving metropolis—trams, which were built before the First World War, ran from one end of the town to the other, their lines cutting through the main streets in loops and curves. the Strzelecki Park blazed with spring flowers, and coloured leaves in autumn. It was a favourite promenade for our family.

My brother Max and I spent hours of summer fun at the Olympic-size municipal swimming pool and the sportsground—the Jewish one. Naturally, the other Poles had one of their own.
