Landscape (the environment that surrounds us) is a multifaceted thing. In this book I emphasize only its visual aspect. I ask: What attracts the eye in the visual world? What do people tend to see when they encounter their surroundings? I do not intend this to be a treatise on how to look at landscape. To write such a book would entail interpreting the built environment as cultural and social history. It would entail concern with the economic and political functioning of places. It would necessitate understanding physical and biological systems implicit in natural processes. Instead, I mean to focus on seeing landscape as visual display. My concern, highly restricted as it is, is neither the logical beginning place nor the ultimate ending place of landscape study. It is merely one dimension of landscape appreciation, albeit an important dimension that deserves renewed emphasis and increased comprehension.
