The events leading up to the founding of our company and the map-making adventures of our first 46 years in business have already been fully covered elsewhere.
In this golden-anniversary publication it seems more appropriate to sketch the history of maps, to look to the future, to write of the great road systems that are being built or planned in many parts of the world, and to forecast, if possible, the growing importance of good maps in a world which is constantly becoming smaller.
I have been so closely associated with the development of our company's particular style of map making and with our concept of free maps as an advertising, sales-promotion and public-relations medium that I would feel embarrassed to write about them myself. I have therefore left the preparation of this volume to my younger associates, confident that they would do justice to the subjects which have been my lifework and which are very dear to me.
