The Dictionary of Contemporary Celebrities — edition of 1880 — in the article on Astier-Réhu contains the following sketch:

Astier, surnamed Astier-Réhu (Pierre-Alexandre-Léonard) member of the Académie Française, was born in 1846 in Sauvagnat (Puy-de-Dôme). His parents were small farmers. He displayed from his earliest childhood remarkable aptitude for history. A course of study more solid than is now fashionable, commenced at the College of Riom and completed at Louis-le-Grand, where he was afterwards to become professor, gained his admission to the Ecole Normale Supérieure, which he left to occupy the chair of history in the Lycée of Mende, where he wrote the ESSAY ON MARCUS AURELIUS, crowned by the Académie Française. Summoned to Paris the following year by M. de Salvandy, the young and brilliant professor showed his appreciation of the favor bestowed upon him by successively publishing THE GREAT MINISTERS OF LOUIS XIV . ( Crowned by the Académie Française ) BONAPARTE AND THE CONCORDAT ( Crowned by the Académie Française) and the admirable INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY OF THE HOUSE OF ORLEANS, the superb portico of the work to which the historian was to devote twenty years of his life. This time the Académie, having no more crowns to offer, gave him a seat among its members. He was already somewhat allied to them, having married Mlle. Réhu, daughter of the lamented Paulin Réhu, the famous architect, member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, and granddaughter of the venerable Jean Réhu, dean of the Acad . . .
