Three of the most eminent Catholic moral theologians in this country have gathered together in one volume a valuable collection of 25 of the most important articles in the field of feminist ethics and the Catholic moral tradition.

This ninth volume in our Readings in Moral Theology proved especially challenging. Once feminist ethics was chosen as the organizing theme, we had to narrow the focus, so huge and varied is the literature. In accord with the purpose of our series we focus on feminist ethics insofar as it interacts with the Catholic moral tradition, and we try to show the diversity within feminist ethics. We also determined, with few exceptions, to select more recent writings. We realize that such a narrowing leads to the omission of some other highly desirable material: for example, a more historical approach would emphasize the original contributions of scholars such as Rosemary Radford Ruether and Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza. All we could do was try to assemble a representative sample of this abundant literature. It is our hope that textual and footnote references will provide further invitations to explore beyond our offerings.

Next we had to develop organizing topics under which we would group the essays. We decided on: Overview, General Theory, Interpersonal and Familial Relations, Bioethics, and Social Ethics. Clearly other categories could have been chosen. Moreover, these are not mutually exclusive categories, especially in light of the feminist insistence that the personal is political.

The editors of the first eight volumes were males. To continue that policy would be clearly inappropriate given our organizing theme in this volume. For this reason a third editor has been added for this volume. Not only that, however. We consulted broadly on . . .
