THIS FIFTH ANNUAL RESEARCH column presents the work of emerging scholars in professional communication. As in past installments of this column, participants were nominated for inclusion by the graduate faculty in their institutions. Based on the strong recommendations of faculty members at University of Louisville, Rensselaer Polytechnic University, and Penn State University, this column introduces the research of Susan Popham, Angela Eaton, and Keith Gibson. These researchers were each asked to prepare an overview of their work, identifying the questions/issues they are addressing, connections between their work and that of others in professional communication, and the implications of their findings at this point in their research processes. Their overviews are included on the following pages.

Readers of the column will immediately note the variety of subjects these scholars are researching and research methods they are employing, including case studies of the business aspects of medical writing, an experimental study into the developing writing practices of business and technical writing students, and a rhetorical analysis of the arguments that have propelled the study of artificial intelligence over recent decades. …
