Bank goes all out for 100th anniversary

At Copiah Bank's Christmas party at the end of 1989, the bank staff and directors and their wives honored three employees-June Thorne, Louise Fugate, and Ann Newell-who collectively had given the bank 100 years of service.

At the party, it occurred to President and CEO Edmund E. Prestridge and other officers that the Hazlehurst, Miss., bank was coming up on its 100th anniversary and they wanted to do something about it.

They commissioned Reverend Ford S. Williams, Jr., a native of Hazlehurst, a Presbyterian minister, and the great-grandson of an original stockholder of the bank, to produce illustrations of places and buildings central to the history of the bank and its community as they looked in 1891. Re drawings were used to create a 1991 calendar and a brochure that told the stories behind some of the illustrations.

These were sent to other bankers, all the bank's stockholders, and other "folks we know," according to Prestridge. Many people contacted him to say they had read the materials and enjoyed them, and some people offered to pay for the calendar. …
