REPRESENTING YOU AND SERVING our great industry this year has been an especially rewarding and humbling experience.

I never really understood, until I became involved with ABA a number of years ago, what a tremendous resource and partner the association is for bankers. No other banking organization is remotely like ABA. The association's leadership in product development and banker education is second to none. ABA's advocacy in Washington sets the tone and the pace for national banking legislation. And with strong support and cooperation from the state bankers associations, our industry is making a huge difference for consumers and the nation. This mutually beneficial and powerful "Alliance" is key to providing unified direction and effective representation for our industry.

I'm especially grateful for the fine work of the members of our ABA Corporate Governance Task Force, and its chairman, James C. Smith, chairman and CEO, Webster Bank, Waterbury, Conn. With their help and assistance ABA has created new resources to help bankers and directors adapt to the changes brought about for Corporate America in the wake of the corporate and accounting scandals.

Though I'm leaving office, the work of the ABA goes on. On behalf of our members, we'll continue to fight for intelligent deposit insurance reform, keep banks competitive with tax-advantaged credit unions, open opportunities in real estate brokerage, build a stronger grassroots lobbying presence in Washington through TEAM 21 and BankPAC, work on renewing the Fair Credit Reporting Act, fight for bankruptcy reform and much more.

Your ABA is working to win a national insurance charter, protect our customers' financial information and reap benefits for our members from financial modernization. This past year ABA joined with Promontory Interfinancial Network to help our members offer high-balance depositors a convenient, safe deposit alternative. …
