Texas Community Banker Wins 2003 ABA Bruning Award

First Class Banking" is the marketing motto--it's even used as the web address--of First State Bank of Stratford, Texas, and this year, its longtime CEO, B.A. Donelson, has taken a first himself. Donelson's been named the top ag banker of the year.

ABA presented its seventh-annual Bruning Award to Donelson, a 36-year ag banking veteran, at the ABA National Agricultural Bankers Conference in San Antonio, earlier this month.

The Bruning Award, named for ag banker Frank Bruning of Nebraska, recognizes lifetime achievement in providing credit and financial management assistance to farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural community players.

Donelson, a Texas Tech graduate, has worked for First State Bank from his first day in the business to the present. The $146.4 million-assets bank sits in a predominantly ag and oil market about 90 miles from Amarillo and devotes a substantial portion of its portfolio to farming. The major area crops are wheat, barley, sorghum, and soybeans. Ranching dominates the area, producing large numbers of beef cattle, hogs, and horses.

First State established a reputation in its Texas and Oklahoma markets for being interested in helping its farm customers. …
