Much of the activity of the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) takes place within the regional groups, of which there are four (Africa, Europe, Pacific Rim, and Americas). Each region has a chair, which is responsible for convening regional meetings at each World Congress and overseeing the performance of tasks assigned to the regions. Newly appointed as chair of the Americas Region is Don Lewis of the Jamaican Association of Public Health Inspectors, a member organization of IFEH and an affiliate of NEHA.

The other members of the Americas Region are NEHA and the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors. Associate members of the federation are included in regional activities. The associate members in the Americas Region include the California Environmental Health Association, the Minnesota Environmental Health Association, the Peruvian Association of Sanitary and Environmental Engineers, Underwriters Laboratories, Loma Linda University (California), Ryerson University (Canada), and the British Columbia Institute of Technology.

In preparation for the 8th World Congress on Environmental Health in Durban, South Africa (February 20-27, 2004), each region is taking the lead in drafting an IFEH policy statement for adoption by the federation council during its meeting in Durban. The policy statements under development include

* West Nile Disease--A Global Threat (Americas Group);

* Genetically Modified Organisms (Europe Group);

* Global Climate Change (Pacific Rim Group); and

* Medical Waste (Africa Group). …
