Retired R&D scientists and product developers who don't want to be totally retired can sign on with a new outfit that will match them to part-time technical assignments at member companies.

Barnard Associates, an Indianapolis, Indiana-based executive advisory organization, has created YourEncore to recruit experienced R&D retirees who wish to solve technical problems for companies like Procter & Gamble and Eli Lilly, its first two member companies. Additional companies are being sought to grow into a network in a range of industries.

"We're just getting rolling," John Barnard, chairman and founder of Barnard Associates, told RTM in early November. "Twenty-five individuals are now enrolled and we're adding four or five, on average, every day. Eventually, we hope to have thousands of experts available for assignment."

A retiree who accepts an assignment becomes an employee of YourEncore (part-time, usually) and receives a competitive fee based on his or her skills and experience, Barnard said. The firm will recruit technical retirees from member companies and provide all back office functions, such as marketing, placement and billing. …
