Yarra Plenty Regional Library Commences 12-Month PDA eBook Trial

Once again at the forefront of new technology, Yarra Plenty Library announced today, the trial of loaning ebooks to library users with PDA's. Using the eBook lending library at Yarra Plenty, patrons can download borrowed eBooks to their handheld devices. In working together with eInfo Solutions Pry Ltd the service will be available to 50 volunteers over the next 12 months.

The aim of this trial is to assess the demand for acceptance of eBooks on PDA's in a public library environment.

Located at, the facility built by eInfo Solutions contains almost 300 titles, mostly works of fiction, and will expand during the 12-month trial to reflect the reading preferences of the patrons. Regular feedback is being sought of the volunteers, identifying such issues as preferred book categories and ease of navigation.

"We are really excited to offer this alternative to our print collection, the library already loans eBooks through the web, but we are amongst the first in the world to offer eBooks directly onto borrowers own PDA devices" says Pam Saunders, ebook Project Manager, Yarra Plenty Regional Library Service.

Mike Ottoy, the CEO of eInfo Solutions, sees this project as "a very important milestone in the development of eBook technology and supporting infrastructure. At the end of this 12-month trial we will have a far better picture of who will read what in an eBook format, what they look for in an eBook lending facility, and whether existing technology, in this case PDA technology, is an acceptable medium". …
