Les Lloyd, the director of academic computing at Lafayette College in Lafayette, Ga., delivers the daily news and weather information to students, faculty and staff via Lafayette's campuswide network.

Lafayette's token ring network uses Novell NetWare to connect all student rooms, classrooms, and faculty and staff offices. Both the news and weather are downloaded from bulletin boards--the weather via modem and the news via a national network based in Cleveland.

Lights Went Off

Until the automation of weather and news gathering, it would have been too time consuming to manually gather the information, massage the data and then distribute it. Lloyd knew of other schools who used this approach, yet decided against offering the service because it was so labor-intensive.

Then, as Lloyd described it, "the light bulb went off." He realized that he could automate the task of gathering weather and news for distribution to the Lafayette community with AutoRun, a program developed by AutoSoft, Inc. of Smyrna, Georgia.

"I saw that at other schools, weather and news were the number one used items on the network," Lloyd explains. He believed that if such a service was offered, not only would more people access the network, but other services would be explored and overall network usage increased.

His hypothesis has proven true. AutoRun has been implemented since April and, according to Lloyd, network usage has increased 50% from the past school year.

How It Works

The program performs unattended computing by memorizing a series of user keystrokes and the amount of time between them. …
