In their article on France in the New Grove Dictionary of Opera (London: Macmillan, 1992), David Charlton and Richard Langham Smith make the important point that even in the face of foreign infiltration from waves of works by composers such as Cavalli, Gluck, and most forcefully Wagner, "French opera had enough strengths of its own to resist an all-out invasion" (2:274).
