Dear Professors Kemme and Teng:

We, Drs. Jordi Sarda Pons and Maria Jose Perez Lacasta, wish to deeply apologize for unwittingly plagiarizing parts of your work. In the February 2003 issue of International Advances in Economic Research, we co-authored a paper entitled, "Exchange Rate and Long-Run Equilibrium in Transition Economies." Several parts of our paper are either identical to or very similar in wording to your paper, "Determinants of the Real Exchange Rate, Misalignment and Implications for Growth in Poland," which appeared in Economic Systems in June 2000.

A similar version of your published paper was presented at the International Atlantic Economic Conference in Vienna in March 1999, which we also attended. Copies of the paper were available to the audience. Much of our research is on a similar topic, so we obtained a copy of your paper.

Once our research project was completed, the results were summarized for submission to a journal. We originally wrote the paper in Spanish and hired a translator to prepare the paper in English so it could be submitted to an English-language journal. The translator asked us for some specific papers about the topic so she could become better acquainted with the vocabulary. …
