In a little town in France, she stood on the corner next to the chocolate store waiting for her group. It was the 'wrong' corner, on the opposite end, causing her to be lost for nearly an hour.

Above the cliffs of Omaha Beach, we looked down at blue water and six young US soldiers laughing and running up the path toward us. Sixty years ago, young US soldiers struggled to survive on that 'same' beach.

At Notre Dame Cathedral, the amplified voice gave a stern warning to the chattering tourists, "Silence!" This voice barely carried over the clanging and banging of the workers renovating the sanctuary.

He told two starry-eyed young women he worked for Chanel and came to Paris every month on business. Later, he asked the concierge for directions to the metro.

At the end of May, I led a group on a 10-day study tour to France. Along with the fond memories I have of this experience and my band of travelers, I also stored mental snapshots of tilted maps. "Tilted" because I viewed encounters from a skewed perspective, inspecting from many angles, anticipating the unexpected, measuring with metaphors. …
