AS/400 Boosts Productivity at York College

When York College in York, Pa., switched from a predominantly manual administrative system to an AS/400-based system, it was a leap of faith, not a gradual transition. "We made a major commitment going to the AS/400 because virtually all the new hardware and software went in simultaneously, says Dr. Frank Mussano, York College's dean of administrative services. But it was clearly the right decision because our productivity has greatly increased without the need for additional people."

York College, a liberal arts institution serving some 2,800 students, had already built a relationship with IBM prior to the AS/400 acquisition. "We were running our registration program on a System/36, but all our other important administrative functions were still manual," says Mussano. "We found that there was a lot of duplication of effort between various departments. So I contacted IBM, which put us in touch with several software vendors in the higher education market. We ultimately chose the TEAMS2000 products from Computer Management and Development Services (CMDS). We found that CMDS is a very serviceoriented company, which is a crucial consideration for us."

York College became one of the first AS/400 sites in the U.S. "Bringing the business office online made a dramatic impact," says Brian Smeltzer, York College's director of the Administrative Computing Center. "We now have about 50 terminals and eight printers attached to our AS/400 Model B45. And we have plans to upgrade to either a D45 or an even newer model later this year."

When York turned to CMDS for software solutions, the college was relying on the vendor IBM chose to be its Cooperative Software Program partner in the educational administrative market for the AS/400. CMDS software offered York College the breadth and depth it needed to integrate both the business office and administrative/advising functions.
