Organising Stage-Gate[R] for Delivery: Aligning Management Behaviours and the Stage-Gate[R] Process. EIRMA Working Group 61; Available to IRI and EIRMA members from EIRMA (European Industrial Research Management Association), 46 rue Lauriston, F-75016, Paris, www.eirma.asso.fr.

This is a report by an EIRMA Working Group that considered the question: given the wide usage of Stage-Gate[R] and similar processes, why is it that some companies, even in comparable industries, have far more innovation success than others? The group began its study with the assumption that a company already had a Stage-Gate process in place. It then set out to examine the supporting environment to best deliver value to the company renovation process, deciding early to focus on a single tangible deliverable rather than a broad industry analysis.

The group-therefore-expanded on the work of Davidson, Clamen and Karol ("Learning From the Best New Product Developers," Research-Technology Management, July-August 1999, pp. 12-18) to develop an innovation process benchmarking tool. This tool takes the form of a scorecard based on the five guiding principles that Davidson et al identified in their survey as key to the success of any innovation process: clarity, ownership, leadership, integration, and flexibility.

Davidson et al discovered that almost every organization they studied had implemented Stage-Gate in some form or other, but what makes the difference In successful innovation organizations is the way in which the process is supported rather than the process itself. The measurement tool aims to reflect this, and the output of the tool delivers an innovation process health-check.

According to the report, the value of this health-check comes in different forms:

* Assessment of general progress toward a world-class innovation process.

* Quantification of the quality of the way in which Stage-Gate has been implemented. …
