In recognition of the authorship of "Managing the Ties Between Central R&D and Business Units, "deemed to be the best original paper published in RESEARCH TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT in 2003.

The winning paper was selected for pertinence, significance and originality of new management concepts related to the field of research management.

Jeffrey Glass was the Joseph F. Toot, Jr. Professor of Engineering and co-director of The Institute for the Integration of Management and Engineering at Case Western Reserve University when this paper was written. He received his Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from the University of Virginia and MBA from Duke University. He has published over 100 papers and is a co-inventor on 11 patents. Glass is currently the Hogg Family Director of Engineering Management and Entrepreneurship al Duke University. Durham, North Carolina.

Ingrid Morris is a doctoral student in management at the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University. She holds an MBA from Kellogg Graduate School. Northwestern University with majors in organizational behavior and strategy. She also holds a BA with honors in economics from Claremont McKenna College. Her areas of research include organizational learning, knowledge management, and organizational structure, Her dissertation models organizational learning processes that facilitate the identification of unexpected outcomes and relevant contingencies. …
