The Association of Iranian Women U.S.A (AIWUS), http://www.aiwusa.org contact person Behjat Dehghan sends an update May 12, 1999, responding to what AIWUS sees as a media propaganda effort designed "to paint an appealing picture of the situation for women" in Iran.

Describing specific items from current governmental proclamations, AIWUS reports:

Article 1117 puts the authority as to whether a wife can have an active social presence or not at the disposal of her husband: "A husband can deny his wife any profession or job which would run counter to the interests of the family or the wife's dignity."

Article 1043 makes marriage for girls conditional on the" the consent of the father or grandfather." Article 1059 prevents a Muslim woman from marrying a "non-Muslim." Article 1060 stipulates: marriage of an Iranian woman with a foreign national, even in cases where there are no legal prohibitions, must be undertaken with special government permission.

AIWUSA also noted the resolution adopted by The UN Human Rights Commission Friday adopted an EU-sponsored initiative that took Iran to task for abuses that including a number of cases of torture, and inhuman treatment such as sentences of stoning and public executions. The use of national security laws to deny the rights of the individual was on the list while Iran was faulted for continued discrimination against women and religious minorities, particularly a worsening pattern of persecution against Bahai's. …
