Expert Explains Why 2005 Is the "Year of BPM"

A BABJ first caught up with David Cornelius a few months ago, when he was vice-president of financial services at Filenet, Costa Mesa, Calif. Now, working on his own as a consultant, Cornelius weighs in on why business process managment (BPM) has caught the attention of analysts this year. Are you surprised to hear that, many years after its introduction, 2005 is "BPM's year?"

Oh, surprised and grateful. It is a Little amusing in that firms like Filenet and others have been working on terrific projects--in commercial lending, compliance, within the capital market space, and for horizontal areas like CRM involving automated workflows--for years. Among clients, there seems to be more of an interest in working across the enterprise rather than just handling documents and data differently in a single department.

How has the technology changed to support these bigger projects?

Use of component-based architecture to automate key business processes means that as tech practitioners, we don't have to "start over" in the setup work as we automate each phase of the rollout throughout the company. New infrastructure must be built up quickly.

Also, there is more use of business process analytics--tools that can help us and clients evaluate the basics: what's happening here, where are the costs coming into this process, what are the objectives and how can we work differently? The client can really analyze the process and amend it if that makes sense.
