THIS is the second special issue of Renascence focusing on the work of the late British-born, American poet, Denise Levertov (the first appearing in 1997-98 as volume 50, nos. l&2). One might point to the publication of the correspondence of Denise Levertov and her onetime friend, poet Robert Duncan, as an occasion for this special issue. Two of the essays published here make substantial use of that new resource. Indeed, scholarship on Levertov now benefits from not only these letters, but the availability of Levertov material in the Stanford University Library archives. Two essays in this issue (Schloesser and Lacey) include reference to some of those materials.

One could say that Levertov scholarship is beginning to "mature." Though there is still no biography of Denise Levertov, scholars continue to develop their understanding of Levertov's life as well as her contribution to American poetry. The variety of approaches and focuses here is yet another healthy sign. …
