The people of South Africa say: Viva Comrade Chris!

LAST APRIL 10, CHRIS HANI WAS ASSASSINATED IN FRONT OF HIS HOME BY AN ultra-right white supremacist. Only 51, Chris Hani had led a life of extraordinary contribution on many fronts to the struggle against apartheid and for a democratic South Africa.

When he died, he was general secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and a chief negotiator in the current transition to majority rule. Previously he served as Chief of Staff of the African National Congress' (ANC) armed wing, MK (Umkhonto we Sizwe). The SACP stated:

...Comrade Chris Hani enjoyed the trust of millions and millions of

ordinary South Africans. His popularity was rooted in his passionate

concern with the everyday hardships of ordinary people.... He knew

virtually every MK soldier and SACP activist by name. Every week he

was out of Johannesburg, traveling to the most remote rural areas,

speaking and above all listening....

Born in a small Transkei village of a migrant mine-worker father and a mother who did subsistence farming to help the family survive, he had to walk 13 miles to school. At the age of 15 he joined the clandestine ANC Youth League, moved by the repression of ANC leaders and by the "Bantu Education" program designed to make Blacks accept white supremacy. …
