Frank E. Vandiver passed away in January 2005 at age 79. During his long professional career Vandiver taught history at several universities, among them Washington University in St. Louis, the U.S. Military Academy, Oxford University, and Rice University. He also served as president of North Texas State University and Texas A&M University. He had degrees from the University of Texas and Oxford University, and he earned his Ph.D. in history from Tulane University. He wrote and edited more than 20 books and 100 scholarly articles. Among his most important books were Their Tattered Flags: The Epic of the Confederacy and Rebel Brass: The Confederate Command System.

Brian C. Pohanka died in June 2005 at the age of 50. Pohanka wrote and edited many books and articles about the Civil War and was a consultant and commentator on the History Channel's program"Civil War Journal." He earned a degree in history from Dickinson College. …
