By now you've noticed the JofA has a totally new look. Actually the publication has undergone just such a metamorphosis about every 10 years--the last one in 1995. But it's never been a question of new for new's sake--it's always been to reap the benefits of new printing and publishing techniques. We now can take advantage of extraordinary technology that offers better production values, faster turnaround and lower costs. I'm sure you've seen the sign in service shops that says: "Fast, good and cheap. You can have any two of them, but not all three." Because of publishing advances available today, we may be able to retire that old saw.

With any innovations in the JofA, we always have one goal in mind: to make the magazine easier for you to read, easier to navigate and as useful to you as possible. When I was a neophyte editor and eager to show off my power-packed vocabulary, I had an editor who lowered the boom by forbidding me to use unfamiliar or obscure words.
