Cupped Ear/Psalm Sounds

Listen to this psalm against the background noise of family gatherings, holidays, reunions, and worship.

Hear the sounds of affection as verse 1 proclaims the joy of being with kindred in unity. The word kindred refers to men and women who are in kin relationship to one another. They share a common history, tribe, ancestor, or name. Since all family gatherings are not necessarily harmonious, it is good and pleasant when this occurs.

Verses 2 and 3 repeat the Hebrew verb "to go down" in three places: running down Aaron's beard, running down Aaron's collar, and falling dew. The image of oil running down is an image of consecration, plenitude, and generosity. Moses ordained Aaron by anointing his head with oil. All priests were anointed with the oil of Aaron on their heads. It glistened on their beards and their beautiful vestments. Priests presided over sacrifice and worship. This psalm reflects the festive sense of meal and worship.
