AICPA Presents First Award for Outstanding CPA in Business and Industry

The American Institute of CPAS presented its first Outstanding CPA in Business and Industry Award to Charles T. Fisher Ill at its 1994 spring National Industry Conference.

Fisher, former chairman, president and chief executive officer of NBD Bancorp, Detroit, was chosen from five finalists by a blue-ribbon panel of judges, including Richard Barton, president of U.S. customer operations for Xerox Corp.; James Maxmin, CEO of Laura Ashley, Ltd.; David E. Sams, Jr., president and CEO of Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Co.; and Alexander Trowbridge, former U.S. secretary of commerce.

Fisher told the Journal, "I was delighted to be considered, and to be selected by a panel of that stature was an even greater honor. I think the award reflects not only on me personally but also on the NBD organization. I had a lot of CPAS working with me over there, and we had some good fortune."

Fisher recalled, "I was notified on Saturday, February 2, 1957, that I had received my CPA certificate. At that time, I was working for Touche, Niven, Bailey & Smart, a predecessor to Deloitte & Touche. …
