INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND

Broadly defined, an integrated library system--variously termed an "integrated online library system" (IOLS) or simply an "integrated system"--is a computer system that uses a single bibliographic database to support multiple library operations. Integrated system concepts have been described and discussed in journal articles, conference papers, and other publications for more than a decade. Examples that reflect system design ideas, product developments, and installation experiences at particular points in time include Allan and Shields (1986), Barkalow (1983), Berk et al. (1990), Bluh (1990), Boss (1983, 1984), Broering (1983), Cook and Payne (1985), Corbin (1990), Davis (1987), DeBuse (1987), De Gennaro (1984, 1985), Dick (1984), Dowlin (1985, 1986), Genaway (1984), Glogoff and Flynn (1987, 1990), Goldstein (1983), Halm (1985), Havercamp (1985), Herr and Truett (1985), Hildreth (1987), Jones and Marcum (1983), Kline (1986), Lin (1989), Lutz (1984), Marrable (1989), Matthews (1982), Morris (1991), Mullane (1984), Norton and Nook (1983), Olson (1984), Powell and Slach (1985), Saffady (1987), Salmon (1986), Sensiz and Bright (1987), Silberstein (1985), Simpson (1981), Vom Heede (1987), Webb (1987), and Wilbert (1986). …
