The Mission of ACEI is to promote and support in the global community the optimal education and development of children, from birth through early adolescence, and to influence the professional growth of educators and the efforts of others who are committed to the needs of children in a changing society.


* To promote the inherent rights, education, and well-being of all children in the home, school, and community

* To work for desirable conditions, programs, and practices for children from infancy through early adolescence

* To bring into active cooperation all individuals and groups concerned with children

* To raise the standard of preparation for those actively involved with the care and development of children

* To encourage continuous professional growth of educators

* To focus the public's attention on the rights and needs of children and on the ways various programs must be adjusted to fit those rights and needs.

To achieve these purposes, ACEI is guided by a dynamic philosophy of education that is flexible and responsive to human needs in a changing society (ACEI Constitution, Article II).

For more than 114 years, ACEI members have shared a dual commitment to the fulfillment of every child's potential and to the professional development of the classroom teacher. They are dedicated to an enlightened, child-centered approach to education that respects the child's developmental experiences at home, in school, and in the community. This philosophy is reflected in all professional programs, including publications, resource materials, topic workshops, and conferences. Members represent every segment of the preschool, elementary, and middle-school fields, and include child care providers, teachers, teachers-in-training, administrators, researchers, teacher educators, and institutional subscribers. With input from the membership-at-large, committees, local, state/province and national leaders, and Headquarters staff, the Executive Board plans strategic goals for the Association for the coming year and beyond. The organization uses the Strategic Plan as a guide when planning programs and services. The activities listed below are those that the respective committees and the Presidents' Council plan to accomplish in 2006-2007 to help ACEI meet its Strategic Goals.

Awards Committee

* Seek the names of nominees from the Executive Board, as well as from the International/Intercultural Committee.

Conference Committee

* Continue to encourage the submission of foreign-language proposals (no translation provided).

Diversity Concerns Committee

* Conduct a special session at the 2007 Annual Conference: "Teachers Teaming With Translators for Parent Communication."

Heritage Committee

* Continue to gather autobiographies of past and present members for inclusion in the ACEI Archives.

Infancy/Early Childhood Committee

* Sponsor a Panel Discussion at a Special Session for the 2007 Annual Conference, examining the construct of readiness from a global perspective.

* Sponsor a Special Session for the 2007 Annual Conference focusing on ways that early care and education programs can be more responsive to children and families in this era of standards and accountability.

Intermediate/Middle Childhood Committee

* Seek new members for the committee with an emphasis on diversity and international representation.

* Encourage committee members to solicit diverse membership in ACEI from their institutions.

International/Intercultural Committee

* Collaborate with the Russian ACEI on tasks related to the ACEI World Conference.

* Collaborate with the Membership Committee in order to increase the international membership. …
