Managing the Mosaic: Addressing Workforce Diversity and Managing Institutional Change in Health Care, a new AHA book by Trisha A. Svehla and Glen C. Crosier, presents new managerial tools for leading a more culturally and ethnically diverse workforce and for ensuring that health care institutions maintain an adequate supply of skilled workers in an era of changing labor-force demographics. The book describes management and staff development processes, recruitment and retention mechanisms, quality management strategies, and other considerations for achieving long-term success in managing a more diverse workforce. The book also includes a resource list and several models for surveys, focus groups, and training sessions.

Managing the Mosaic is divided into 10 chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 describe the recent demographic changes transforming the American labor force as well as their implications for health care managers eager to address the shortages of skilled workers.

Chapters 3-5 present step-by-step tools for identifying barriers to successful diversity management and for analyzing how well an organization is meeting expectations from its workforce and from the community at large.
