New Tax Division Chairperson to Focus on Service to Members

Deborah Walker succeeded Harvey L. Coustan as chairperson of the American Institute of CPAs tax executive committee on October 25. Walker, who has worked for KPMG Peat Marwick since she finished graduate studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, is partner in charge of the firm's Mid-Atlantic compensation and benefits division.

As chairperson of the tax executive committee, which supervises and coordinates all projects, programs and activities of the AICPA federal tax division, Walker plans to focus on members during her two-year term. "I want to concentrate on services to business, especially small practitioners," said Walker. "CPAs who do not work for a big firm really need the AICPA for resources the larger firms often provide for themselves."

Walker knows she must devote her attention to specific issues to be successful during her two-year tenure as chairperson. But, as she told the Journal, she is prepared to address the large tax policy issues as well. "I want to look at our tax system and whether it provides the incentives we need for global competitiveness," said Walker. "This means we have to look at the whole tax system and ask if it efficiently collects revenues while stimulating economic activity. …
